Family

Family is all that we have.  Whether we consider our closest friends to be our family or our blood to hold that role, it is who we are, what we're made of, and at times all that we have on this earth.  Our roots ground us - tie us to earth - so that we are not lost souls, floating, not bound by anyone or anything we hold dear.

As we celebrated my brother's birthday tonight, I felt the ties that hold us together, not cords of discomfort, but of love, understanding, mutual respect and accomplishment.

Upon my return home, I learned of a college acquaintance of some years back, who recently lost his brother after an organ transplant surgery.  It filled my heart with pain for the loss his family has endured.
